Work At Home But Also Measure The Value of Your Time

Working long days while trying to figure out how to develop and launch a new product or service is nothing foreign to those of us who work at home. However with that being said, many of us do not truly understand how much our time is actually worth.

For instance, if you are having a conversation with a friend who works at a department store, they can tell you that the department store pays them an amount of dollars per hour for their time. Thus, an hourly worker has no problem stipulating what their time is worth. The same holds true for those who work on either commission or salary.

For those of us who work at home, it is a different story. The vast majority of us work more than an eight hour shift. Furthermore, we constantly think about our business even when we are not sitting in front of a computer working. If your business is one which you enjoy and are passionate about, it becomes even more difficult to determine what the time which we spend on the business is truly worth.

The reason why we are discussing the value of time is that knowing this will help you exponentially in managing your schedule and making a greater amount of profit. The formula which you can use to determine the value of your time is easy. Simply take your income, and divide it into the total number of hours which you have worked. Of course this is not a perfect calculation since it neglects to take into account the time which you spend thinking about your business, as well as your expenses. Nonetheless, it will suffice to provide a rough estimate.

When making this calculation, I would suggest that you base it upon a longer time frame, such as a week or a month. This will minimize the possibility of encountering skewed results which could be due to schedule fluctuations or customer buying patters.

For most individuals who work at home, and have not been doing so for very long, it is not uncommon to find that the value of your time is a few dollars per hour or less. Once you are better able to optimize your business, this number should increase.

Nonetheless, you now have a starting point from which you can measure your progress. This formula will also give you an objective set of units upon which to measure improvement in the value of your time if you work at home.
