Work At Home - Five Necessary Actions

Even though I enjoy great freedom with the ability to work at home, it requires great organization and time management to produce success. At times working from home requires more out of me on a daily basis than any traditional job I have ever had. If you are not careful with your time, you can arrive at 5:00 and realize you haven't achieved anything that you wanted to. It is so easy to get distracted by straightening up the house, throwing in some laundry, running some "quick" errands, and before you know it the day is gone. This is why it is so important to set some ground rules and focus on your time management. I have tried to help out by listing a few simple rules to follow:

1: Ask yourself some important questions - Freedom is great but it doesn't pay the bills and if you don't have the focus you need, this could be a disaster waiting to happen. The first thing I had to do was ask myself a few important questions. Is this really for me? Do I have the concentration to complete the daily tasks necessary to be successful? Can I work to meet the deadlines while still retaining my freedom that I worked so hard to achieve? Before you give a home based business a try, you might want to start by asking yourself questions like this and answer them with as much honesty as possible.

2: This is a real job. - At times, working from home may seem like a fairytale - but it is indeed a fulltime real job. Even though you have the luxury of avoiding all the traditional workplace drama, you still need to get a full days work in. Lounging around the house does not pay the bills all by itself. You need to set a schedule and follow it everyday to make sure you are working to the fullest extent. You might want to set times for breaks and lunch just like you would in a traditional job.

3: Appoint an accountability partner. As I write this I am waiting on my daily phone call from my manager, (I mean my wife) who will be calling to tell me she loves me, but more importantly checking in to get a status report. This accountability is very important to me, and my wife has obliged me by checking in with me a couple of times a day. It gives me a compass to go by and goals to reach as my day progresses. See, I may be the CEO of this little room I am working from, but even CEO's have to answer to someone. I do not want to disappoint either of us, so I work extra hard to achieve the goals that I have set aside for my day. It is easy to let ourselves down, but it's not easy to let down that one person who has always believed in you.

4: Separate work time and family time. - To manage your time working at home efficiently, you have to delegate what you spend your hours on. Set you're the number of hours you need to have for working your home business and concentrate on that alone, if possible. However, when the end of the day bell rings, show the same commitment to your family as well.

5: How organized are you? - This is another very important question you need to address. De-clutter your home business surroundings. Concentrate on putting things away when you are finished with them, both on your computer and in your filing cabinet. Label everything in folders both online and offline. Being organized can lead to your success more quickly.

Do not take a chance of losing the true freedom and enjoyment you can accomplish when you work at home, just because you can't manage your daily tasks. The freedom of a home based business is a great thing, but you have to respect that luxury, and recognize it as such.
