One common question especially asked by people who have worked for other people is - what do I need to do to get started in a home business. This is particularly true for those of you that have been in employment for a long time.

One common question especially asked by people who have worked for other people is - what do I need to do to get started in a home business. This is particularly true for those of you that have been in employment for a long time.

Those of us between 40 and 60 are now being classed as middle aged but for most of us we are still very active both physically and mentally. We have learnt that the daily journey to work can become a real chore that becomes more and more onerous. One of the options is to start our own home business but there are six things that you need to think about before you start.

The most important of the six is that you should not quit your day job just yet. When you make the decision to start your own business you have little idea about whether or not you will enjoy it or that you have the aptitude to make it successful. So, if your job is covering your living costs then it is not a good idea to give it up to early.

So, don't dive in unless you are sure and then analyze your exit strategy. In fact there are two exit strategies you need to work out. The first is how to walk away from your job when your home business is a success. The second is how to walk away from your new enterprise whether it is building it to sell it or building it for residual income so you never really stop owning it you may just stop working in it.

The third thing your home business needs is a financial plan. If you are employed you know how much money you earn, and I assume you know what your expenses are (both the regular bills and the ad-hoc spending). So, these figures should tell you what sort of money you need to make to cover the outgoings. It also gives you the goals to aim for at least to begin with because of course the end goal is to make so much more than you do today.

Now you need to think about what sort of business do you want to be in? If you do some research on Google you will find a vast array to chose from - it could be network marketing, consultancy, affiliate marketing and so on. I will write about the different types in another article. Associated with this you need to sit down with your lawyer or accountant and decide what legal format your business is going to have - sole trader, partnership, limited company etc.

Now, you need to build out your business plan. You have got the financial part but you now need to work out the rest of the journey your business is going to take. This means you know what your targets are at each step along the way so you can monitor progress. If you fail to plan you plan to fail.

The last step surprises people. You need to make sure your health is up to the journey. Running your own business can be physically more demanding than working for someone else - longer hours, more stress over income and so on. Also, you are doing this so you can make money so you want to be as sure as you can be that you will live long enough to enjoy the rewards.

Before you start your home business spend a some time going through these six steps as they will greatly improve your chances of becoming as rich as you want.
